REVIVE: AN END AT ST. NICHOLAS AVENUE
The demise of 288 St. Nicholas Avenue at the corner of 125th Street was much talked about this year and it appears now the the entire building has been completely demolished as of this past weekend. Strangely enough, only a two story commercial construction is arriving on the spot which would be similar to the one next door which houses Harlem's only major movie theater and a Chuck E. Cheese franchise. Anchor tenants for the new building have been rumored to be a drugstore and one particular restaurant chain: LINK

I pass this every day. Terrible to see beautiful brick architecture destroyed.
ReplyDeleteSuch a shame it was a beautiful building. At least they could have kept the facade so the neighborhood architecture doesn't change too much.
ReplyDeleteThere is a Duane Reade at 125th & 8th avenue and another closer to Broadway, and a CVS at Lenox. Seems like too many drugstores, not enough grocery stores! Enough already.
ReplyDeleteThis is utterly, utterly heartbreaking. It was such a beautiful building - the kind we will never see again. Harlem needs more landmarking. ANOTHER drugstore? Shameful.
ReplyDeleteWorse still that they are only replacing it with a two-story building -- seriously? It's smack in the middle of a major commercial corridor with an express train next door, and they can't come up with a serious, mixed-use building at a scale commensurate with the setting?
ReplyDeleteAgree with Pete, such a prime location that it's insane not to have a mixed-use building there.
ReplyDeleteAlso, TGI Friday's? ugh. harlem, you can do better.
