ARCHITECTURE: ANOTHER CHURCH CONDO ON 116TH?
UPDATE: SO THE PLAN IS APPARENTLY 6 YEARS AND NEVER WENT FURTHER THAN THE PROPOSAL.
We are not sure how old the renderings are from the Sterling Architects website, but it looks like another Harlem church might be converting into condos based on the proposed sketches. This has been a big trend uptown since many of the house of worship purchased old land or property when nobody wanted it decades ago and are now in position to make a profit. The baptist church at 132 West 116th Street used to be one of the big movie houses on that cross street but the front portion has since been demolished but the actual theater section on 115th street still remains (lower photo). A community space within the new complex is the usual stipulation once the property has been developed and thus the churches receive a brand new construction for their congregation. Check out what the original facade on 116th Street used to look like in our past post: LINK

The theater portion is on 115th side of the street.
ReplyDeleteNOT happening. The church voted against it 6 years ago.
ReplyDeleteWeird that they would reject an option like this (or some variant thereof).
