REMEMBER: A RETAIL JUNCTION CIRCA 1940

Who can guess the location of this commercial junction circa 1940?  The triangular lot is being used for other purposes in recent decades and that storage building is still a major landmark but a lot more modern these days.  The answer and updated photo can be found after the jump.

This view is looking north from St. Nicholas at about 123rd Street with the Dwyer condos to the left.  Those low level retail buildings at center have long since been demolished and now the brutalist police station holds court at this triangular intersection.  Archival image courtesy NYPL

  1. Is this where 121st, St Nicholas, and Frederick Douglass meet? Now there is that great statue of Harriet Tubman.

  2. Yep. The plumbing supply place pictured is now the 28th Precinct station. I feel like this picture was taken from the vantage where the HT statue is now.

  3. The modern photo is from the west side of St. Nicholas at about W. 122nd Street. The vintage photo was taken about a block south. In the vintage photo you see St. Nicholas and FDB intersecting. The park with the statue of Harriet Tubman is where the triangle forms (where that streetlight is.)

  4. The building in the background is The Dwyer. The new building looks a lot like this old one in the photo. The building in the foreground is where the police station is now.
