SHOP: A NEW CHAIN ON 157TH AND BROADWAY

Plywood has been up at the corner storefront on Broadway by 157th Street for some time now but what will be arriving at this commercial corner in the Heights?   We walked by the location right in front of the Number 1 subway stop a couple of days ago and saw a sign indicating that a major chain has already signed a lease.
From the posters out front, one can see now that Boston Market will be arriving at the storefront on the south border of Washington Heights.  Other major chains like Chipotle have skipped prime Central Harlem or 125th Street for more northern reaches of greater Harlem in the past and it will be interesting to see how Boston Market performs at this intersection. Thoughts?

  1. I live a few blocks away so have been following this pretty closely. Although I would prefer to see something more unique, along the lines of the newer/better restaurants opening in Hamilton Heights, I still think this is an improvement for the nabe (and certainly better than the Twin Donuts that was there) and will probably do pretty well.

  2. Nice! But if you're in Morningside Heights or the like, it will still be quicker to get to the one on 55th and 10th Ave via the A/D express.

  3. I too would have preferred something that wasn't a chain, but the rent, from what I understand, was very high, something like $25K a month. It seems to me like we already have this sort of food covered up here what with all the Dominican restaurants, but perhaps they will do us all a great service by cleaning up that tacky facade.

  4. Chain, yeah its not as desired but the main problem is, Fatty Boston Market below a large gym. Woulda been smart to have a healthy food option, chain or not.

  5. A second Streetbird would have been great. The one on 116th has the charming train exit entrance. Could have been a signature of Marcus's

  6. I've been saying a Boston Market would do so well up in Harlem and it is a shame that they bypassed all of south Harlem to go so far north... I hate traveling all the way to Chelsea or Hell's Kitchen to eat there..

  7. Just curious if anyone is still reading this post...and if you have tried the 157th Street location. I live in the nabe and have not tried it yet, but am happy to see that corner looking shiny bright. Then again, I fantasize about independents thriving up here as well.
