BESPOKE: BAUDELAIRE'S MISTRESS, RECLINING

Harlem Bespoke:  Who is depicted in the painting Baudelaire's Mistress, Reclining? This might be a question that comes to mind when the famous work by Manet arrives in Harlem at the Wallach gallery later on this month.  Jeanne Duval is the famous woman shown in the portrait and the Haitian-born dancer would become the inspirations for the French poet Baudelaire for many of his writings.

The creative circles in Paris in the mid 1800s would have crossed over during this time period and thus a rare oeuvre depicting a women of color has been included in Manet's breadth of work.  While many might have since forgotten about Charles Baudelaire, his beloved Venus Noire will forever be regarded by the public in this notable oil painting.  Read more about the show that Musée d’Orsay and Columbia University will bring uptown on October 24th in our past post: LINK
