REMEMBER: A NIGHTCLUB MAP OF HARLEM

Harlem Bespoke: We have done a few stories on the 1932 Nightclub Map of Harlem over the years and now the New York Times goes in depth on the famous prohibition era speakeasy guide.  The article reveals that a young African-American illustrator named Elmer Simm Campbell came up with tour of Lenox and 7th Avenue in the 130s and 140s that was the center of nightlife for much of Manhattan since many downtowners took the A Train uptown for entertainment. Prohibition would actually end the next year so things would never be the same shortly after the work of art was finished.  Mr. Campbell eventually ended up working for Esquire magazine later in life and the nightclub map was eventually acquired by Yale University for $100,000 just a couple of years ago: LINK
