GREEN HARLEM: UPTOWN SOLAR ENERGY

Harlem Bespoke: As the city's populations grows, being green and sustainable has been a major concern in many communities on the local, industrial or commercial levels.  Green Harlem is a new feature on Harlem Bespoke which will explore various options, plans and main users of the initiative for a more sustainable focus on how we live.

Talks of solar energy have been around for decades but has the environmentally friendly source of renewable energy been adopted within city life?  Some might be surprised to see local brownstone owners like the one pictured on 112th Street using the green technology now for over a decade and on  certain days no energy from the ConEd is being used.  Not bad for a $30K investment which ends up paying off quite quickly.  There is also a brownstone on East 120th Street that sold a few years back which had solar panels on the listing.  We have also seen a couple of larger prewar building with solar panels on the roof in greater Harlem but do not have detailed information as of yet on those histories.

As for everyday use, those walking by Citi Bike stands might notice that a compact solar tower sits above each location which powers the electronic components of the local bike share system.  These are just some micro examples of the resource being used and there is no reason why uptowners can not expand even further with this clean way to power the city.  More details can be found on this website which promotes solar energy within affordable housing building: LINK
