Harlem Bespoke: A developer demolished the old row of tenement buildings at the northeast corner of Park Avenue and 125th Street some time ago and everything was demolished quite quickly in the past year. This now appears to be quite common on Harlem's historic commercial strip which has remained low-rise over the past century but recent rezoning by the city has had speculative buyers swoop in to purchase property to eventually be sold for the land. The interesting thing about this particular situation is that this corner located right across the street from the Metro North Station has been designated as the last stop on the future 2nd Avenue Subway extension which will cross westward on 125th Street from the east side.
A New York Post article from from April mentions that the city does not intend to use eminent domain to claim the property in question but but their is also a deficit of roughly $5 billion or more that is delaying the summer ground breaking of the project. If everything gets approved by 2019 then the full uptown subway extension on the east side could possibly be complete in 10 years if there are no further delays. More details on the 2nd phase of the Second Avenue subway connecting from 96th Street can be found on this city site: LINK
