CONSTRUCTION: FACADE REVEAL AT SHABAZZ MOSQUE
Harlem Bespoke: The next door commercial space by the Malcom Shabazz Mosque on Lenox just south of 116th Street had construction planned since we took the above photo back in 2010 but it now appears that things have really picked up. We walked by site and noticed a major change from the distinct mid century design that blends in with the main building which is historic since Malcom X preached at the house of worship when it was a Nation of Islam Mosque.
Fast forward to 2019 and it now appears that the architectural direction has gone back to a more traditional aesthetic that blends in with the brownstones of the neighborhood. This new design not only looks different but also lets in more light with the addition of extra windows out front. Nevertheless, this address has been dormant for quite some time and it always is good news when a building is fully active on the block.
