REMEMBER: THE GOLDEN ARCHES OF 125TH STREET
Harlem Bespoke: The abrupt announcement earlier in the week that the McDonald's on Broadway at the corner of 125th Street would close actually caused quite a stir amongst uptowners. Our Facebook site has quite a few comments on how folks in the neighborhood had visited the famous fast food spot since the 80s. First jobs, high school hangouts or even late night at the drive through that was part of the American dream for many. As can be seen by the photos taken this early afternnoon, the arches are quickly going down and moving trucks are parked out front.
The new Columbia University Manhattanville campus has already started to come together in the background and row of new buildings have been planned for the site as part of the school development of the neighborhood. Contrary to popular belief, there will be no condos at this corner but most likely the buildings going up will be approximately the same height as the neighborhing prewar apartments just south of this corner. At this rate, a full demolition of the site should be happening quite quickly in the upcoming weeks. Check out the orginal development rendering in our past post: LINK
