Harlem Bespoke: Make My Cake shuttered last year on the corner of 116th and St. Nicholas Avenue to pursue cheaper rent further south on the Upper West Side and something new apparently has arrived at the former address. A Bespoke tip came in this past month mentioned that a bar appears to have taken over the formerly vacant space so we decided to drop by to take a look.
West 116th Street between Lenox Avenue and Frederick Douglass Boulevard has been Harlem's Little West Africa for decades so it is only appropriate that Assinie has arrivdd on the block. Our African geography is not that great so after a little research, it appears the moniker refers to resort paradise on the Ivory Coast that is a major destination for global travelers looking for scenic beaches. What is different here are the carved wood doors which are more traditional than anything founds in the neighborhood and is a nod to the cultural heritage of the new business.
