DWELL: THE BAILEY MANSION ON SUGAR HILL

Harlem Bespoke: One of our first Bespoke historic house posts from 2009 was about the incredible Bailey mansion which arrived on the townhouse market the year before for $10 million but then the big recession hit.  Real estate pricing on the high end really took a dive and a lucky buyer would eventually buy the former home of Barnum & Bailey circus fame for a fraction of the asking at just $1.4 million in an all cash transaction.  The famous address took several years to restore but the intact interior and exterior are unlike any other found in the city which made the final result quite breathtaking.

As far as the sale goes, a shell for a small brownstone in Harlem can not even be purchased for that price nowadays so this might have been the deal of the century as far as Greater Harlem is concerned.   Everything is in a single-family layout at 10 St. Nicholas Place at the corner of 150th Street and the estate could possibly be the largest detached residential home in Manhattan that has not been chopped up into apartments currently in use.  We are not sure what everything would go for these days but having a house of this size in the city might be something to keep within the family for generations to come.  Check out what the interior originally looked like in our past post: LINK
