QUESTION: WHAT'S UP WITH 1763 AMSTERDAM?

Harlem Bespoke: We have not had a chance to do a followup story on the church at 1763 Amsterdam Avenue by 147th Street since demolition for the historic site was announced back in 2017.  Some might remember the significance of this building was that the house of worship had been the location of the funeral of Malcolm X and was set for demolition a couple of years ago.
As can be seen by the above photo taken more recently, there is nothing left of the address which was one of the only churches uptown that would hold the service for the controversial Harlem leader.  A new residential tower had been planned for the site but we could not find any permits posted in the past couple of years indicating as much.  The 95-year-old building was originally the Bluebird Theater and a synagogue a one point in time.  Read more about Childs Memorial Temple Church of God in Christ in our past post: LINK
