READ: 34-STORY TOWER AT FORMER MCDONALD'S
Harlem Bespoke: The old McDonald's at corner of 125th and Broadway closed abruptly this past summer and many thought it was going to be a part of the new Columbia campus in Manhattanville. The Real Deal has now revealed that university now plans to construct a 34-story residential tower that has nothing to do with the campus and will be the tallest building in all of Harlem. Apparently this will all be for students and faculty. Everything is a bit unclear here especially since the community agreement for the Manhattanville campus relegated the height of the building to not be so massive and this particular corner is next door to the low-rise residential part of the neighborhood.
If a tower was going to be built this tall, it would have made more sense in the middle of the industrial area just north of 125th Street since Columbia has since demolished the majority of the buildings on those blocks. Construction apparently will finish by 2022 if everything goes to schedule for what possible could be the tallest privately-owned student housing building in the city. More on the McDonald's demolition can be found in our past post: LINK
