Harlem Bespoke: Do you remember old Harlem? Who can guess the location of the former Tree of Life bookshop as shown above circa 1980? This distinct corner was a key location for development and the historic building was the last one prewar construction to be left on the block before being demolished for a planned 500 room hotel that never materialized. This image was from the I Remember Harlem documentary that was released in 1981 so we assume the footage was taken months before the Bill Miles film release.
As can be seen in the second photo, this is the corner of Lenox Avenue and 125th Street with the state office building which was completed in 1973 in the back view. The original signage for the older building would have been for Howard's department store which was apparently a fixture on the main street for many decades.
