LGBT: PRIDE IN HARLEM 2020

Harlem Bespoke:  The LGBT rights movement started with the 1969 riot at Stonewall in the West Village and local establishments uptown are recognizing the historic milestone.  Most notably, the Apollo Theater on 125th Street has changed from the usual monochrome message to radiate the rainbow in a show of unity for pride month.  Those who have researched their history will know that a lot of Harlem Renaissance icons were LGBT and played an important part in transforming the neighborhood into the black cultural center of the world.

Harlem Tavern was another uptown business showing some pride over the weekend with a large flag posted out front.  Many shops in the neighborhood already have smaller flag stickers in the windows but it is nice to see such a large display of support out in the open. The struggle for equality is definitely the theme for this month on so many levels and more visibility will be popping up on the streets in the coming weeks.
