REMEMBER: LOFTS ON 125TH STREET CIRCA 1940
Harlem Bespoke: We were walking by the hardware store on 125th Street just west of Fifth Avenue over the weekend and wondered what the neighboring buildings used to look like. The three are actually similar in proportion but have clearly been altered over the years. As can be seen in the 1940s city tax photo, the trio were actually quite similar and were in commercial use back in the day. The loft spaces above also remind us a little of the buildings in Soho but those have been designated landmarks and are in much better condition. Construction on 125th Street has been picking up speed recently and prewar building are becoming much less common on the boulevard so look up while you still can.
