THE 125TH STREET FERRY STATION CIRCA 1952

Harlem Bespoke:  The city has on file what could possibly be the last image of the 125th Street Ferry Station to Weekhawken, New Jersey taken around 1952 or so.  Ferry transportation in the neighborhood had been around since the early 1800s but the arrival of the 20th Century would be the beginning of the end.  Everything was up and running at this specific building since the early 1900s but somehow the efficient form of commuting fell out of style within 4 decades and the physical structure itself was apparently leased out to a car dealership.  The site was then demolished by 1965 and the area was dormant until the West Harlem Piers revived the area into a park space back in 2009.

With that said, the piers by the Hudson are quite nice as a recreational space but there have been talks about bringing the ferry back since Manhattanville will be a major hub by the end of this decade.  Columbia University has already partially built their newest campus in the area and more restaurants are starting to appear once again.  We also like that a ferry system for Harlem would mean diminished automobile traffic from commuters which makes for less carbon emissions and cleaner air for uptowners.  More on the historic 125th Street Ferry Station can be found in our past post: LINK
