Harlem Bespoke: Uptowners who love public art like the reclining Statue of Liberty at Morningside Park should hop on a train to the Heights and check out another famous lady by the same artist. The location is at Fort Tryon Park just north of 190th Street and honors an unlikely forgotten fallen hero at the Battle of Fort Washington over 245 years ago.
Margaret Corbin was the first documented woman to fight for the United States and would be wounded at this site during the Revolutionary War. Women in battle was not a common thing as far as our history books tell it and this is the first time many might have heard of the heroic Margaret Corbin. Artist Zaq Landsberg also took inspiration from the French gothic architecture of nearby Cloisters to construct the effigy sculpture and incorporated everything with patriotic details. There are quite few benches surrounded the site and fantastic fall views of the Hudson serve as the majestic backdrop. Check out the other work by the artist in our past post: LINK
