Harlem Bespoke: Uptown's latest vegan soul food opening on Frederick Douglass by West 114th Street is easliy one of the city's best for all the serious vegetarians out there who want a little more with their meatless meals. As a lifelong New Yorkers, we have tried everything and Vegan Hood really has the elements that make a comfort food menu great. Quality, presentation and also nice size portions are all in the mix.
Our lunch feature today was the Saint Nick Fried Chix with Mac & Cheese and Collard Greens for $18.99 which was just as good as most of the non-vegetarian restaurants we have tried over the years. The chicken drumstick are actually on wood skewers to really get the shape right which is a great way that the chef elevates the experience along with the super crunchy crust and savory meatiness within. All of the flavor is there and much better than most of the meat alternatives on the scene. The Mac was also creamy and rich which paired well with the collards that we were ready to order a bucket of to take home.
So yes it is all vegan which will never 100 percent replace the real deal to some but once the comparison is taken out of the equation, any diner looking for better health and whole lot less cholesterol will really appreciate that a younger generation is making vegan cuisine quite hip these days. Kudos also to the great re-design of the former Harlem Food Bar space which now has a much younger vibe and is instagram ready. More on Vegan Hood can be found in our past post: LINK
