Harlem Bespoke: The Coalition of 100 Black Woman have restored Hancock Park at the intersection of Manhattan Avenue and St. Nicholas by West 123rd Street for over a couple of decades and now the once closed off green space around the sculpture of a man with a fierce handlebar mustache will be open to the public soon. We walked by recently and noticed that a circular path has now been cleared around the center statue and several brand new benches are in place. So who the heck was Hancock anyways? Winfield Scott Hancock was a very celebrated Civil War commander who nearly became President of the United States in 1880 and the sash on the public work of art indicates military honor. Nearby Hancock Place also bears the honorific to the forgotten gentleman of post Civil War New York city.
