Harlem Bespoke: Historic churches being torn down because of diminishing congregations are back in the news again and perhaps St. Thomas at West 118th and St. Nicholas Avenue is a good reminder that preservation is always an alternative. Back in 2010, the news was that an affordable housing deal was on the table if everything was torn down but fortunately protest by locals and politicians encouraged things to go another route. Land at the back of the church eventually had a new residential development rise on site but the church itself has now been restored and is a community space that has held local events such as art fairs in recent years.
