REMEMBER: SHORAKKOPOCH ROCK IN INWOOD 2022

Harlem Bespoke: There are not a lot clear photos of Shorakkopoch Rock in Inwood Hill Park all the way up on the north most tip of Manhattan but we manage to capture some amazing photos earlier in the year.  This monument dedicates the site of Native American village that the Dutch reportedly purchased all of Manhattan for a handful of beads back in 1626 but the validity of that claim has always been put in questions.  A plaque mounted in 1954, for better or worse, marks the infamous event and is definitely worth the visit for some local history that is part of our national legacy.
The best way to get to Inwood Hill Park is on the A train to 207th Street and just walk straight into the grassy part of the park and walk along the visible edge of the forest towards the northern marsh.  The monument is on the cusp of the woods and it is easier to find the rock if you avoid going into back paths that traverse through the natural forest.  We also wrote about Manhattan's only natural marshlands earlier this year and visiting the area would also be a great opportunity to check out this part of uptown: LINK
