Harlem Bespoke: Showing up to support the community is what it is all about! Even though we are pretty much into diet season in preparation for summertime, we made it over to Lee Lee's on West 118th Street just east of Frederick Douglass Boulevard to support one of Harlem's longest running businesses. So what is it that makes pastry chef Alvin Lee Small's recipe so good?
It is all about the butter! We really are not a big fan of the more dry pastries found elsewhere but you can tell Lee Lee's is freshly made since the moist, buttery insides are lighter and flakier than most rugelach out there. Drier pastries were traditionally made in the past since they kept on the shelves longer for days or even weeks but these small batch, baked confections are sold quickly and thus can be made with fresher ingredients. Those who want to indulge in a bit at Harlem's heritage bakery should definitely check out Lee Lee's which is open now 7 days a week with hours from 11:00AM to 7:00PM.
