☞ REMEMBER: Manhattanville's Gas Tank

In the previous post on the Manhattanville Viaduct, one might notice a mysterious, barrel shaped, gridded structure looming over the Viaduct in the background. Evidently, this 20 story high building was a gargantuan gas tank that stored fuel for this part of the city. Only a handful existed on the piers of the Hudson and many old photos or paintings depict the one in West Harlem. In 1961, the tank was demolished to make way for the equally massive housing project in the north end of the Viaduct Valley. See an example of the gas tank in an early 20th century illustration: LINK. To reach Manhattanville, take the 1 train to 125th Street and walk west towards the Viaduct. Photo courtesy NYPL
