☞ REMEMBER: The East Harlem Railroad
We mentioned yesterday that the Harlem Railroad system had an elevated track on Third Avenue while Fourth Avenue still had horse-drawn trolleys in the last half of the 19th century. The top photo is the actual view of East 107th Street looking at Third Avenue and the tracks that were present around 1912. The streets were still mainly dirt back then, and horse carriages were still very common for everyday travel. About two thirds of the buildings in the photo still stand today, and the view at the end of the photo is of some tall public housing buildings. Thanks to one of our readers, Sankofa, for mentioning and providing proof that Park Avenue today still had some remnants of being originally named Fourth Avenue. The second photo down is a building on 128th Street that still marks that corner of Park Avenue as its original name. Click on top photo to enlarge.
