☞ WALK: Harlem Hybrid
Most folks have seen it, but not many have stopped by to read the history of the sculpture called Harlem Hybrid. The small, triangular park of Roosevelt Square floating in the middle of the intersection of West 125th Street and Morningside Avenue is often seen as a pedestrian haven since crossing 125th Street, at this junction, is a bit tricky since no formal crosswalk is available. The curvilinear bronze statue, with park benches surrounding it, sits in the center and is one of the better pieces of public art that the city has commissioned. Created by Chicago artist Richard Hunt in 1976, this welded, large-scale, polished bronze piece is an abstract masterpiece from an artist that has works shown in the Museum of Modern Art. The top photo shows Mr. Hunt in 1976 as he unveils his work. The piece has also been restored and polished once more in the past year, so take a gander at it while it still looks brand new. The closest subway is the A,B,C,D on 125th Street.
