☞ WALK: Old West 126th Street
Right off Amsterdam and West 126th Street in Manhattaniville, little has gone up in some time but a few things are missing from this quiet corner of West Harlem. The center photo from 1938 shows the west side of Amsterdam, right across from the Mink Building. The top photo is a close up of the substantial, free standing building with Gothic detailing on the north end of the block. Behind this structure is a public school building that still stands today. The last photo shows the corner as it now looks, and one can find a gated enclosure at the far right that is currently a public swimming pool. The single level stands at the corner of 126th Street and the Gothic designed building has since long disappeared, but most of its neighbors have survived the times. This block of Harlem can be easily accessed by taking the 1 train or the A,B,C,D to 125th Street. Archival photos courtesy of NYPL. Lower photo by Ulysses.
