☞ WALK: Romanesque Balconies on West 136th

Across from the Schomburg Center on West 136th Street might be the most curious set of Romanesque style townhouses in Harlem. For such small structures, miniature balconies have been formed with columns and curved arches to form an oasis of porticos on the third floors. There's only two of these buildings on the north side of West 136th Street between ACP and Lenox Avenue but they definitely are the stand out of the block. To get the Schomburg Center and this section of central Harlem, take the 2,3 express to 135th Street. Photos by Ulysses

  1. I noticed these building before and really like these playful balconies, what a great spot for relaxing with a good book. I also like the adjoining buildings with arched lower windows and accentuated faux arch keystones which give these adjacent buildings a sense of mass and solidity lacking in modern architecture.

  2. there's something sort of similar on a row of houses on the south side of west 144 st., near hamilton place, though admittedly not so pretty nor rounded
