☞ REMEMBER: East Harlem Cobblestone Streets
The 2nd Avenue subway blog called the Launch Box had some great photos of Lower East Harlem from 1971 and today (click on photos to enlarge). The two big surprises are that all those high rises were not built in the 1960's and that the cobblestone was still intact on the streets 40 years ago. Currently, a big underground boring machine is set to start drilling out the tunnel in March and the Launch Box is counting down the days. Archival photo courtesy of the New York Transit Museum.
