☞ WALK: FDB Eateries on Film Via the NY Post
There's more FDB/8th Avenue news in the media today. Check out the clip from the New York Post that covers the restaurant row below 125th Street. Best Yet Market is also featured and is the only commercial space reviewed that actually is located in one of the new condos. The nice boutique restaurants in the clip are all in the prewar buildings that share the avenue. The newer buildings have to step up to make their spaces more affordable in order for boutique businesses to thrive but apparently the residential condos are selling out pretty quickly nevertheless. So great to see that FDB is already being recognized in it's fledgling restaurant row stage.
ReplyDeleteLove that video - I could use one of those Honda's as often as I go up & down ACP! I wonder if they are legal on the road.
ReplyDeleteAs for our restaurants - keep um comin....
Agreed. The Post itself is usually not written so well but the video clip is well done. Bravo!
ReplyDeleteI generally wouldn't so much as wipe my ass with a copy of the Post -- but this video clip was not so bad...
ReplyDeleteUly: Interesting point regarding the commercial spaces in the newer buildings versus the older ones. I wonder what kind of businesses they're currently targeting?
I think that new restaurants and cafes should consider opening on Manhattan or Morningside or any brownstone side street if the zoning allows for it because those are much more charming streets. Of course there would not be the foot traffic but the draws would be views of Morningside Park and the character of the older buildings.
ReplyDeleteThere appears to be a vacant space at 111th and Manhattan - I think 5 and Diamond would have done a tremendous amount more business located there instead of it's present location between a bodega and a dingy Chinese takeout place.
Pete, I think that because of the square footage involved in some of the new buildings, they are mostly targeting anyone that can afford the bill i.e. large commercial retailers. South Harlem got lucky with Best Yet but usually it is a Duane Read or something similar that comes along. We have been hearing a lot of folks wanting a decent gym below 116th Street so that's something that would fit the bill in some of these spaces.
ReplyDeleteYeah, a gym in that stretch would be great...
ReplyDeleteAs for 5 & Diamond, Anonymous, it appears to be doing fine on FDB. I don't imagine its immediate neighbors will stay the same forever, and the construction project on the block appears to be moving like gangbusters.
I do agree that the 110th-113th St stretch of Manhattan Ave could be better utilized -- even the big residential buildings themselves seem to be largely neglected and/or sealed off with cinder blocks. Such a shame, given the location and architectural stock.
On 145th Street we will gladly trade you our gym for one of your nice restaurants. It is a mystery to me why nothing has opened up here.
