☞ WALK: Sakura Park Blossoms Bloom Early
Because of the recent spell of warm weather, the cherry blossoms in most of the parks are at their peak as we speak. At the same time last year, we started watching the blossoms at Sakura Park over at 122nd Street and Riverside Drive and they were only about 20% in bloom. There are cherry trees all over the city but none of them have the pedigree of this small, well-appointed oasis that faces Grant's Tomb and boast about a dozen trees which were a gift from Japan 98 years ago. Washington D.C. ended up with the majority of the Japanese trees from that season but there are enough here uptown for folks to see the same splendor that the nation's capital enjoys when spring weather comes along. The nearest train to this location is the 1 train at 116th or 125th Street. All photos by Ulysses
