☞ ARCHITECTURE: 1854 Amsterdam Avenue
The tall, distinct red brick building at the southeast corner of 152nd Street in upper Hamilton Heights has a slightly criminal past. Actually, the mansard roof, four level, semi-detached structure at 1854 Amsterdam Avenue was originally the police building for the 32nd precinct when it was first built in 1871. By the time the 20th century rolled around and as the fashion of police buildings got less fancy in nature, the department would eventually move on. More recently, a church-run community center was founded at this local landmark. There's not a lot of mansard roofs in town these days and this one has the original cast iron cresting still intact up top. The closest station to this location is the C train at 155th Street. I love your blog, because I walk by a lot of these buildings all the time. I see this one a few times a week on my walks, and I always wonder what the deal is!
