☞ REVIVE: West 125th Subway Renovations Begin

The rumors of the West 125th Street elevated 1 train station renovations are now becoming a reality. As of last week, signs were being placed underneath the landmark viaduct on Broadway and the space underneath has been sectioned off from any parking. Yesterday, construction equipment, along with a work crew, moved in so apparently there's going to be some action in the next coming weeks. This project was originally targeted for a 2010 finish date but now it seems March 2011 is the more realistic timeline. See our past post on this $7 million renovation project: LINK. 2. The sign about parking has me thinking that it'd be great if DOT would just permanently remove the parking spaces under the el and open up that space for another use. You could have some sort of linear public space with greenery and benches (think Allen Street Mall on the LES) or even a farmer's market or other vendor space (like the old Marqueta under the Metro-North). When these renovations are over nobody will miss the parking spaces.

  3. This will look great when freshened up with a new coat of paint. I hope the Columbia University buildings complement this magnificent structure.
