☞ REMEMBER: The Chatham Phenix Bank Building

The boarded up building with the two-story high columns on the ground floor, just east of Lenox (at 125th) used to be the Chatham Phenix National Bank. We found an old photo from 1928 when it was still in business along with the smaller buildings that used to be in this section of Central Harlem. Surrounding the bank today are more recent additions (lower photo) but one can clearly make out the low-rise buildings that existed on the lots previously. Particularly interesting is the Harlem Tea Garden at the far left. That building still exist today and has the Starbucks in it. Archival photo courtesy NYPL. Current photo by Ulysses
