☞ REMEMBER: 1 West 125th Street circa 1920
The lower photo shows northwest corner of 5th Avenue and 125th Street prior to its transformation to the Harlem Applebee's which had us wondering if the building ever had anything classic going on with it. The top 1920's shows that there was a substantial cornice detail around the upper perimeter of the building, some handsome paneled windows and a corner cast iron awning. As far as wishful thinking goes, the bones of the original building are all there if the new proprietors ever decide to go back to a more classic look. Also, the open lot further west was originally the location of the first Harlem YMCA building: LINK. Archival photo of 1 West 125th Street courtesy of NYPL.

Absolutely amazing. The street lamps are lovely.
ReplyDeleteAnd there should be a movement to bring back striped awnings.
