☞ DWELL: 79 West 119th Street Off Market
On the market since 2007, the SRO building at 79 West 119th Street (the brownstone with diamond shape entrance door windows) has finally been pulled off the market as of this past August. The landmark building in the Mount Morris Park Historic District looks to be north of 18 foot wide but the overall condition and the fact that it was fully occupied probably did not help things move at the original $1.5 million asking price. Any SRO near a million is really stretching it for a deep-pocket buyer these days and the surprising thing about this property is that it never had a price cut. From the interior shots, it looks like there's a lot of original details but not in particularly good condition. Did anyone take a look at this one?

Just curious, it sounds like every brownstone used to be a SRO at some point. Does that just happen if you rent out rooms or does one have to register/file a SRO? At what point in history did the family brownstones start to turn into SRO in masses?
