☞ READ: iPhone Thefts Rise Around Columbia
We reported last week that smartphone "swiping" thefts have been on an increase around Lenox (just north of the 116th Street Station) and today's DNAinfo reports similar incidents over by the Columbia campus on Broadway. The only difference here is that the Ivy Leagues school's main strip on Broadway, between 110th Street and 116th Street is densely packed with students, middle class families and restaurants. In addition, this section of Morningside Heights is fully loaded with security cameras on every building and street corners. While the teen thieves might have grabbed a few cellphones over the past couple of months, the video cameras in the area have taken a pretty good swipe of what they look like: LINK. Should more cameras be implemented to deter petty crime (or at lease catch the criminals) in other areas uptown? Read more details of this recent type of theft in our original post: LINK

Looking on the bright side, maybe the upswing in phone thefts will deter some of the mindless, endless phone chatter on the street. Especially egregious are young mums blithely walking and talking away, completely focused on themselves and what they are saying and totally ignoring their children.
ReplyDeleteSanou's Mum you are sooooo funny !!!!!
ReplyDeleteI say more cameras, home owners should consider installing cameras to record street activity, these recordings can be a valuable tool by the police in catching end ridding our streets of these crminals.
ReplyDeleteSanou while I would normally find this type of comment funny, being robbed of your property is never cool and these young men need to feel the full pain of the law. To be honest if they did not have so many "rights" they would not feel so comfortable being so brazen. In Singapore they would get their just rewards with a very public flogging which is exactly what they deserve.
ReplyDeleteOn the issue of the cameras, I am all for them as long as they record good images and we can catch these criminals. Don't let them take Harlem back just when it is 70% turned around.
