☞ REMEMBER: St. Aloysius circa 1931

One of the most striking Catholic churches in Harlem is located on 132nd Street just west of ACP 7th Avenue.  The top image from circa 1931 shows St. Aloysius as it sits close to the east end of the block but one only gets a sense of scale to the building.  The current lower photo provides a little more detail on the intricate nature of the facade and also the color variations to be found.  More on the church that was designed around 1904 in the high Victorian-Gothic Style can be found at this preservations site along with an interior photo: LINK.  Archival photo via NYPL

  1. Thanks for this post Ulysses. Some of my cousins who lived on W. 133rd Street went to St. Al's school back in the day when it was a great school. One of my cousins still writes with a fountain pen as a result of his training there. The inside of the Church is very beautiful also, just like St. Al's sister to the east; All Saints.
