☞ ARCHITECTURE: Modern on 126th Street
Another interesting modern townhouse in Central Harlem can be found just west of Lenox Avenue on 126th Street. This new building was constructed sometimes in the past few years and has a roofline that matches its older neighbors. The interiors are probably all contemporary but the exterior somehow misses the mark on making a new statement in a striking way. There is an austere aesthetic to this building which has a very clinical feel to it that feels more like a commercial construction. The grey facade also does not help here in this case for the brickwork almost appears to be made out of cinder blocks. In contrast, the neighboring brownstone painted in stucco pink provides a vibrant contrast to an apparent diverse block of architecture.

I may be wrong but I think this building was finished very recently and the units might even still be for sale?

It's an Abyssinian project.
And I wonder if there are any plans for the vacant lot 3 doors east of here. It's just as narrow so seems like this kind of building could be replicated, but records seem to indicate that it's owned by the city (HPD).
Not a fan of this monstrosity !
ReplyDeleteis that finished? It’s supposed to look like that? Cinderblock chic?
ReplyDeleteWelcome to my bunker.
I would assume this building has some interesting spaces inside with double height ceilings, I would like to see the interior.
ReplyDeleteThis block has some fabulously restored brownstone facades with some crisp masonry work and front areas, further west of this home.
ReplyDeleteI don't particularly like it -- but I don't hate it, either. The ridiculous pink brownstone next to is belongs to Vi Higgenson of the Mama Foundation, and one can only hope that whomever moves in next door torments her with noise they way her Foundation torments her neighbors.
