ARCHITECTURE: STRIVERS ROW AT 139TH STREET
The painting from 1892 that we posted last week showed two distinctly colored townhouse developments in the background and many guessed that this was probably Strivers Row. Above is the modern day view showing West 139th Street at ACP/7th Avenue and one can see that nothing has really changed especially since the blocks are landmarked. There was also a lone standing mansion which is no longer in the area today but archival photos show that it was called the Watt-Pinkney estate: LINK

Interesting!... if you checkout the front façade of the mansion in the painting and then look at the historic photo you'll see that 139th
ReplyDeleteStreet between 7th Ave to Lenox has not been cut threw yet, despite, King's "Strivers" Row having already been constructed to the west.
