SEE: IN A WORLD OF THEIR OWN AT MCNY
In a World of Their Own: Coney Island Photographs by Aaron Rose at The Museum of the City of New York, 1220 Fifth Avenue at 103rd Street. We saw this great summer exhibition during the Museum Mile event last week and highly recommend especially for folks who want a glimpse of the mid-century that modern day media tends to leave out. Coney Island has alway been a beach for the people of the city and diversity is clearly on display.
When Aaron Rose began photographing Coney Island in 1961, he bypassed the bluster of the theme parks and sideshows for the more intimate interactions of beach dwellers. Wielding his camera surreptitiously, observing as if from a neighboring blanket, Rose documented a “sun-baked melting pot” of beachgoers of all ages, ethnicities, and walks of life, each one utterly unselfconscious, absorbed in a world of his or her own.
