REVIVE: A GEOTHERMAL TOWNHOUSE

Neighbors on one block by the Mount Morris Park Historic District have been informing us that drilling for Harlem's first geothermal energy townhouse will be happening sometimes in the next week or so. Some homes and uptown buildings already have solar panels on the rooftops but geothermal energy is less common for smaller properties.  Apparently drilling will last all day and neighbors have been notified about the event.  We like the eco energy update but wonder if some of the fantastic original details at 123 West 118th Street still remain at the home sold last year: LINK

  1. I’m not so sure I would love that if I lived on the block. . . perhaps geothermal is better for non-urban communities. Bet someone’s foundation cracks. . .

This is a beautiful house on the outside. Hope the inside is simpatico.

  2. Wonder how they get that drill back there. I always that this is a great idea when developing a vacant lot but I can't imagine they can drag the drill through the basement to the garden, can they? Or over the building by crane?

  3. I assume they will be drilling into the cellar floor, I am curious how this works in terms of drilling depth, heating / cooling benefit, savings, plus pumps, heat transfer equipment etc. Very interesting.

  4. they will be drilling on the sidewalk in front of the house. from what i have read about geo-thermal in manhattan you need to get to a depth of at least 500 feet and possibly more for optimal heat transfer. as someone who does live on the block and very close to the house in hand, yes next thursday should be an interesting day!
