Who can guess this mystery corner in Harlem circa 1910? The photo does not actually have a date attached to it but seeing that the theatre featured Vaudeville shows and that an African-American population had not moved in yet, we can assume this is sometimes before 1920. This building actually still exists today and is on one of the major intersections uptown.
ANSWER: A Facebook commentator mentioned this building was demolished on the corner of Amsterdam and 145th Street which now has a community facility. Based on the Historic Society's reference, we assumed this eventually became the old Bickford Coffee shop on the corner of 145th and Broadway: LINK
The modern photo has been added and the community center that sits on the site now can be seen looking east on 145th Street and Amsterdam
Looks like 145th Street and Broadway.
ReplyDeleteI believe the site is the NE corner of Amsterdam Ave & 145th Street. If you note to the right the street is dropping down which appears to be the hill of 145th Street. and the houses have the steep entry stairs similar to the house that survives on that block.
ReplyDeleteThe building going down the hill to Convent Ave are still standing.
