BESPOKE: THE ARTHUR MITCHELL EXHIBIT 2018
Jan 13th – Mar 11th, 2018, Wednesday – Friday, Noon – 8:00PM, Saturday & Sunday, Noon – 6:00PM, Arthur Mitchell exhibit at the Wallach Art Gallery Columbia University Lenfest Center for the Arts, 615 West 129th Street, just west of Broadway. The first major uptown exhibit spanning the career of ballet legend Arthur Mitchell is now open to the public over at the new massive Columbia University arts center in Manhattanville. The living icon actually spoke at the opening reception and we were able to get a sneak peek of the historic show.
The Harlem native was a principal dancer at the New York City Ballet in the 50s and founded the Dance Theatre of Harlem in the 1960s at the Church of the Master by Morningside Park. With more students signing on, Mr. Mitchell then used his savings to buy a garage space on152nd Street and established a permanent home base for the burgeoning company which is still at the same address today. This exhibit features old posters, memorabilia, video clips, costumes and even a photo from Vogue featuring Iman at the studio. Those interested in this extraordinary presentation have until March to do so and should stop by the 6th Floor of the Lenfest Center from Wednesday through Sunday. More on the Wallach Center can be found in our past post: LINK
