GREEN HARLEM: MORE CARBON NEUTRAL STREETS

Harlem Bespoke: As the city's populations grows, being green and sustainable has been a major concern in many communities on the local, industrial or commercial levels.  Green Harlem is a new feature on Harlem Bespoke which will explore various options, plans and main users of the initiative for a more sustainable focus on how we live.

Probably one of the more complicated issues for uptowners is the reduction of main source of carbon emissions coming from transportation.  With that said, Green House Gas emissions from various vehicles are undeniably the main source in the United States and nation's largest city of 8.55 million people has a lot of motor traffic that pollutes the air.  For the majority out there, a personal automobile is frankly unnecessary in a metropolitan area with a vast public transportation system and having a private vehicle adds exponentially to the degradation of the air everyone breathes.  Uptown is especially central to many subway lines or bus routes which are used successfully on a daily bases to get around the city by most of population.

Car shares have most recently been tested uptown and cycling has made a comeback these days but have had resistance since some argue that they take up parking space.  Then there are city buses which have been converting to emission-free electric models over the years with a plan to fully convert the entire fleet in two decades.  Subways are of course on the electric model and most New Yorkers very successfully use this mode of transportation more than any other to commute on a daily bases.  Taxis, ride share and just an occasional rental would probably be best for those needing a vehicle on certain occasions but those serious about cleaning up the environment should probably reconsider purchasing a car unless it is one of those new electric models.
