GREEN HARLEM: FALL COMMUNITY GARDEN CROPS
Harlem Bespoke: As the city's populations grows, being green and sustainable has been a major concern in many communities on the local, industrial or commercial levels. Green Harlem is a new feature on Harlem Bespoke which will explore various options, plans and main users of the initiative for a more sustainable focus on how we live.
The warmer than usual fall weather appears to be a great perk for the many community gardens in the city. We walked by the Clayton Williams Garden at the corner of 126th Street and Frederick Douglass Boulevard over the weekend and noticed that the crops appear to be at their peak this time a year. Collard greens are especially verdant at this official New York City green spot that has a handsome classic cast iron gate along the perimeters.
On an environmental note, having green spaces throughout the neighborhood actually absorbs the toxic emission from automobiles which is the main cause of all air pollution so having more is always beneficial. Land availability in Manhattan has diminished over the years with the demand for housing but rooftops are now the bigger opportunity for gardening in the city: LINK
