It took about 3 years to finally open but now Archer & Goat on Lenox by 119th Street has the distinction of being one of best eateries to arrive uptown in the past decade. We especially love the Latin, South Asian and East Asian flavors mixed into dishes like the seared duck tossed in with fresh chop herbs on top of seasonal vegetables or the signature burger with a chunk of queso blanco and loads of savoriness thanks to a layer of red pepper sofrito. Seasonal vegetables like the seared zucchini are also cooked just to the right point and all have the right mix of added ingredients like a touch of saffron to bring out the brightness of each dish. There is a certain focus on fresh ingredients here along with not too many complicated flourishes which is quite refreshing and will be one of the trends to watch out for in the next decade.
The ground floor brownstone location with the contemporary bar serving up excellent drinks up front gives the 40-seater space a boutique restaurant feel that is harder to come by these days and the entire concept just fits well into the landmark brownstone neighborhood. Painted white brick walls, geometric floor tiles mixed in with industrial furnishings surrounded by house plants provide an updated but approachable ambiance to the uptown dining destination. Everything is a labor of love from the local couple that started up the eatery and reflects the owners' diverse backgrounds which feels a lot more like New York than some of the other eateries found further downtown.
