BESPOKE: THE LERONE WILSON STUDIO

Harlem Bespoke:  We noticed that Harlem artist LeRone Wilson was featured in New York magazine recently as part of an artist collective that rents out studio space in the Bronx and decided to take a visit to actually see some of pieces in person.  The local artist uses bees wax to create unique wall paintings that are also sculptural at the same time and the organic pieces are evocative of earthly elements.  A new piece encased in a clear box was being worked on as we walked in and we were immediately impressed with the modernity of the concept.

There are no straight lines in nature but patterns abound and Mr. Wilsons has now introduced the transparent linear construct which is indicative of the hands of mankind in the bigger picture.  Earlier works were tinted in bright primaries but now neutrals tones, blacks, whites and metallics have added another layer of interest to the collection on the wall.   As can be seen by the closeups, both small and large pieces have a very dimensional nature to them and really captures the attention of the viewer for more than a brief moment. Photos only capture glimmer of what art is about so seeing the pieces in person is definitely an experience in itself worthwhile.

A background story was revealed on how everything started up over two decades ago when a young artist walked into an art supply store where the owner was in the process of getting rid of a large trash can size bucket of unused craft wax that nobody wanted.  Being formally trained at an art school, Mr. Wilson saw the possibility of a new way of expressing the medium that was gifted and the rest is history.  Works can be scene currently as part of gallerist Bill Hodges’ new gallery in Chelsea in the Bearden and Company exhibit starting this Thursday.
