SEE: BISA BUTLER AT THE CLAIRE OLIVER GALLERY

Harlem Bespoke: We were able to drop by the new Bisa Butler exhibit at Clair Oliver Gallery on 7th Avenue by 135th Street in the past week and really discovered the contemporary artist who has quite a unique portraiture technique.  The colorful large-scale figurative work has a lot of pattern in the background and one piece even has Frederick Douglass depicted but this initial recognition soon changes into further discovery.  Upon closer examination, intricate stitching patterns with puffy batting filled sections make themselves apparent and then one realizes that the entire canvas is actually a handmade quilt.

Each piece takes over 300 hours to create and the notable artist has a waiting list of interested buyers before any of the exhibits actually open.  Private collectors and now many museums have all waited to see what the artist comes up with and the Claire Oliver Gallery is probably one of the only places to see Ms. Butler's current work in the city.  Everything will be up for viewing free to the public until April 25th of this year so make sure to not to miss out on this extraordinary event.  More on Claire Oliver can be found in our past post: LINK
